                                                    What Is A Physician Assistant

At Physician Assistants (PA) work as part of the healthcare team with the Physician being the team captain. The physician provides supervision to assure that the PA is performing duties as directed. PAs complete a two-year educational program at a medical school or teaching hospital that emphasizes basic and medical science. This classroom training is followed with an average of 2,000 hours of supervised clinical practice. A PA routinely performs patient history and physical exams, orders and interprets laboratory tests, manages and treats illnesses, writes prescriptions and provides patient education and counseling. PAs improve patient flow by seeing walk-in patients, follow-up visits and disease management cases. This allows the physician more time to manage complex cases. Patients find that having a PA as part of their healthcare team reduces patient waiting times, enhances the continuity of care and improves patient satisfaction.
The Decatur Wabash Outpatient Clinic utilizes the services of Mrs. Amanda Shils, PAC on an as needed basis and may the following information serve to introduce her to you. Graduates of Southern Illinois University, Amanda and her husband, Phil (who is also a PA) are parents of an adorable three year old daughter, Lucia. Quilting, sewing and assisting Phil in restoration of their Victorian home keep her active when away from patient care. Daughter of retired Wabash Administrator, Mr. Bob Kimmons, Amanda comes with qualifications and recommendation from other physicians in our community.
