_______________________________________
Retiree Board member, Mr. Clarence (Bill) Chabak and Wabash Administrator, Bob Kimmons, congratulate Mr.Larry Nihiser upon his recent retirement.  Larry served on our Board for many years.  He is being presented a recognition plaque for his committed and dedicated service not only to his Boilermaker brothers but to all Wabash Members.

  • Remember that CT, MRI and PET scans for members with Wabash as their primary insurance need to be precertified (was effective January 1, 2005)
  • Check each line of your hospital bill even though you may not understand part of it.  There have been times when a physician orders a test or procedure but subsequently cancels it.  The hospital may inadvertently bill you for it anyway.  Most often we have to rely on our members to report any errors in billing.  If we pay for an MRI that was never performed, it could cost Wabash and you $5,000 for work that was not done.  Help us save you money by calling 1-888-800-9161 and report any errors that you find.
  • We're asking Actives and Retirees to help us spread the word.  We have very generous eligibility rules now.  Wabash has something to offer everyone connected to NS, N&W, Wabash, Nickel Plate and IT.  We have pharmacy discount cards, imported drugs, Medigap coverage for seniors and supplemental plans for just abut everyone.  Nearly all our plans beat those available through United Healthcare.  Let us prove it.  If your group needs a speaker consider inviting Wabash to make a presentation and find out what "Friends of Wabash" is all about.

Spring Shape Up

 ___________________________________________

Keeping a rein on our weight by making careful dietary choices as well as a fitness program are things that contribute to a healthy lifestyle.  According to Dr. Don Colbert in a recent issue of Enjoying Everyday Life, "most of America's health problems are caused by dietary abuses".  Dr. Colbert also mentions that "the average American now consumes approximately 150 pounds of sugar per year and about 11,250 pounds in his or her lifetime.  Equally as dangerous are the saturated, hydrogenated and polyunsaturated fats many Americans consume".  Dr. Colbert recommends limiting or avoiding some items and replacing them with others.  A few of them are listed here:

AVOID               REPLACE

Butter            Melt butter in a saucepan

                     and add equal amount of

                     extra-virgin olive oil.  Stir

                     and allow to harden in

                     refrigerator

Hi-Sugar       All-Bran, Fiber One, Shredded

Cereal           Wheat, Grape Nuts, Oat Bran

Dessert          Trade cookies, cake, pie for fruit

mixed with nuts such as almonds

                      walnuts, berries, melons, grapes

Herbs             Limit salt, choose more garlic

Spices             parsley & other natural

                       seasoning

Meat              Choose extra-lean, free-range

meat, and trim off all fat.

                       Select chicken breast and turkey

                       breast over dark meat.

Before beginning, always check with your doctor to make sure the dietary regimen and the fitness program are appropriate for you.
